This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are hard-working and eager to learn. They all have a hearing loss, but this does not hinder their motivation to become readers. They support one another, encourage each other, and offer praise for a job well done. There is a special connection that they all share, understanding the need and patience required to make communication happen--whether that be via sign language, lipreading, writing, gesturing, working with an interpreter. . . They are an amazing group and a joy with whom to work.
My Project
We will add these books to our classroom library of books. Students will have more choices for their independent reading time each day. The more time spent in the practice of reading, the more my students will develop in their reading skills. For Deaf/HH students, the key to academic success and success in life is being able to read and write English. Also, our students will be encouraged to read at least 20 additional minutes at home each day. They will use the tote bags to take home leveled reading books that they will read to their parents and family every night.
