My Deaf students are engaged in learning theatre through exploratory games and improv. They study classic plays/literature and perform them for hearing/Deaf audiences. My goal is for students to improve their language (ASL and English), confidence, teamwork, ability to empathize, etc., etc.!
My students are middle/high school Deaf students, and I work at a school for the Deaf.
Most of my students have little to no experience with theatre, but they have so much natural ability! They love to perform and connect with audiences through using their bodies and their native language, ASL.
My Project
We will be performing the play "12 Angry Pigs" (based on the classic, "12 Angry Men") this year for our Winter Program as well as a special performance for the NAD (National Association of the Deaf). My goal is for my students to learn about "12 Angry Men" and its message of deep, hidden prejudices. I hope that my students will be able to connect with this message. We will also perform this piece so my goal is for my students to increase in awareness of themselves, others, their ability to get in touch with their emotions in order to communicate effectively with each other and the audience.
The items requested are integral to my students "becoming" the pigs and wolf in the story! The pig noses, ears, tails, etc. will help each student to "put on" their characters!
My program has a small budget, and every year we have to fund-raise to support trips around the state.
Donations will greatly help us be able to continue to travel and perform. I cannot say enough about how theatre changes my students' lives! They learn so much about themselves and the world! They improve in so many ways, and they love to perform!
