Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever looked at insects and been oddly fascinated while at the same time repulsed by them? Have you ever watched CSI on television and wondered how they could figure out the crime based on the bugs that were recovered? My students have often asked these questions and wanted to learn how.
The school I teach in has been hit especially hard in the recent economic struggles in California, and the rest of the nation.
Much of our schools financial resources are locked into the essentials for the classrooms (textbooks, lab supplies, etc.), with very little left over for enrichment and supplemental materials. However, many of the students have not had their desires to learn cut, and are often left hungry for more. The majority of my students love the material, but just want to learn more or learn about specific areas that we don't have the proper resources to experience to the fullest.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of different materials, such as pins and mounting boards, that will help my classes build a collection of insects that can be collected from the community. This collection will be used as a basis and reference to allow the students to examine the anatomical structures that our 6 (and 8) legged friends have. Also we will examine and learn about the organisms that pose threats to humans and those that are pests both in the home and the agricultural pests of the region.
An additional area will be using the insects for forensics class. Students will get a chance to collect and observe the insects that play a role in forensics, and work at building a collection to display the various life-cycles that are at work in many of the insects.
With these materials, the students will get a hands on experience in the collection and preservation of the local insect species that live in their own neighborhoods (literally in their own backyards as well).
In the broad scheme, many students will go on vacations and find different species that either they bring back, or that they can describe to their classmates, creating a chance to see how diversity exists in everything around them.
