Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 12 different classes of wonderful advanced 7th-grade students. All of these students truly enjoy. I find it important to have multiple different digital materials available to be able to engage my students remotely. Since we are now hybrid and might be for the foreseeable future, technology is more important than ever. For this project, I wanted to have students work on mastering digital art. In order to successfully create digital art it is important they have access to computers compatible with these digital art programs. I want to give them unique and exciting projects that go beyond hands-on crafts, especially since technology is so important right now while learning remotely. My students come to school enthusiastic and excited to learn! Unfortunately, since teaching remotely, I feel more students are unmotivated and I believe by providing them fun learning opportunities to create digital art and photo editing they will be more invested in learning remotely.
My Project
An artist’s ability to create is largely dependent upon the tools and materials at his or her disposal, and this is especially true in today’s digital world. Without fail, all my students each year are most excited about learning to create digital art, use photoshop, and edit pictures. Apple computers are the premier content creation tool. There’s so much you can do on Apple computers that allow students to tap into the creative world of digital art. For instance, students will be able to access Adobe Photoshop CC to learn the basics of Photoshop and have access to hundreds of different tools and designs for them to create numerous art projects digitally. Currently, I am teaching with a very old computer that is not capable of meeting the current digital content creation and classroom demands. Moreover, the school’s computers are equally outdated and incapable, depriving the students of modern art instruments.
The goal is for students to be able to use this computer in groups and create digital art together when we resume in-person classes next month.
I plan to have students use this computer for art projects, such as photographing an inspiring human or animal, and have them take turns digitally manipulating the photo in Photoshop to create a portrait of overlapping shapes. Moreover, students will explore how technologies have changed the way artwork is experienced. They will help each other work to achieve their desired artistic result. Until the students can go back and use this computer in class, I will use the computer and share my screen with students to introduce the various programs and share with them how to use the apps step by step. The upgraded computer will also allow me to record, edit, and share instructional videos and lessons with the class.
