Help me give my students new chess sets, chess clocks, and snacks for the after-school chess program I am starting at my public, vocational high school in Washington, D.C.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My motivated, hardworking students are from nearly every neighborhood of Washington D.C. and most qualify for free or reduced lunch. Nearly all students are African American, and their performance on district assessments and college entrance standardized tests has been solid, but there is room for improvement.
Our school provides top-notch comprehensive and vocational education opportunities for many of the most at-risk students in the District of Columbia.
I am a special education teacher and work with students from all high school grades in all content areas. Many of my students come for extra help before and after school, and they are driven to be successful students and positive change agents in their communities.
My Project
When I started teaching at my new high school in Washington, D.C., in March one of the first things I learned was that many of my new students loved chess. I bought four sets and kept them set up in my room and students started to come by to play at lunch. Some days as many as a dozen students would come to my room at lunch or after school to play and learn. This year I want to start a more formal chess club in addition to the drop-in lunch games. I want to give my students the opportunity to compete against other schools in the district, and I want them to play in tournaments. It is imperative that we have more than four chess boards for this, and it is important that students have the opportunity to practice with chess clocks. In addition, it is important that students have snacks because school days are long and teenagers get hungry.
