Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Like most students, my students come every year with a story. The obstacles and barriers my students have to overcome continue to pull at my heart strings year after year. My students have endured some events that I, as an adult, have not and will not experience. My goal as their teacher is to make them feel different when they step into this classroom. I want them to feel safe and excited to learn. Often, the experiences they have in the classroom are the only positive ones they experience for days, weeks, months, or even years.
"You can make excuses or you can make progress; Never both at the same time." --Unknown.
My school is a Title I school. This means, majority of our population is below the poverty line. We provide free breakfast and lunch to 100% of our students. We also provide food for the weekends to majority of students enrolled. Our students come to school hungry, tired, and discouraged. The staff here does everything in their power to uplift our students. To make them feel like no matter what their situation, they too can achieve greatness.
My Project
For the past few years, my student have struggled with being proficient in math and science. In the classroom, I plan to use the Dash Robot and iPads to explore math and science simultaneously with my kiddos. As for science, Dash uses many forms of energy and must be coded on an ipad in order to move; however no coding experience is necessary (it is kid friendly!). As for math, I will write math problems for the students to solve and place possible answers on paper on the floor. Once they solve they will be code the robot to move to the correct answer. Dash Robot will also be used in cooperative groups, promoting social skills.
Donating to our project, will help increase my students future success and academic achievement.
The biggest struggle my students encounter is their lack of experience because of their socioeconomic status. This robot will not only advance their understanding of school content, but will also allow them to explore their future career options. On the Wonder Work website, they also provide many lessons to incorporate all subject areas into the exploration of Dash.
