Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My four hundred and fifty elementary students create a diverse community of learners. Over 65% of my students come from non-native English speaking families with many arriving to the U.S. for the first time.
As a teacher in a low-income and high poverty school district, many of my students are struggling readers.
Despite the difficulties my students endure in and out of the classroom, they truly enjoy coming to school and learning. I strive to foster that enjoyment and create meaningful learning experiences for each of my students.
My Project
Dash robot is a codable robot that can be used in the classroom in a variety of ways. Students use block coding to make the robot move, talk, and light up. Students code Dash to navigate mazes, code songs for Dash to play, and code Dash to compete against another group's Dash. I have been fortunate to receive a couple Dash robots in the past; however, I have 24 students in a class and really need another one for more students to be actively engaged. The students love using them!
Dash provides engaging, hands-on learning experiences that enhance and change the way students think, work together, and use technology.
Every student learns at a different pace and the Dash robot allows for differentiation of instruction and highly supports my English Language Learners as coding offers a way to show learning without the necessity of being a fluent English speaker.
