My students are terrific techies! I frequently say that I have the best job in schools right now, because kids love technology! Whether I am working with a kindergartner on learning Microsoft Paint to create a masterpiece, or a fifth grader to learn Microsoft Publisher to make a page for the school yearbook with me, my kids love tech! Since its inception, I have implemented The Hour of Code with my students, which has become the largest world-wide educational event for all ages in history! As education moves towards STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-Math) project learning, Coding, also called Programming, is a major piece of my classes.
My Project
These attachments connect to Dash Robots, from Wonder Workshop, of which I have two in my Tech Classroom. With the xylophone attachment, my students can code Dash Robot to play music. There are musical tutorials already built into the free Dash Robot iPad app called Xylo, that teaches students how to code, or program, Dash to play familiar songs on the xylophone. After the tutorials, students will have the base-knowledge from which to code their own musical creations with Dash. The Sketch Kit Marker Refills work in the Dash Sketch Kits, which I purchased last year with my own money for my classroom Dash Robots. Students code Dash to draw on paper using the Sketch Kit Refill Markers. My students can apply mathematical concepts such as measuring lengths and angles to code Dash Robot to draw sports fields, like baseball, football, and soccer. Of course, once the sports fields are drawn, my students can play those sports by coding Dash Robot! The two accessory packs contain 4 items that fit onto Dash: bulldozer, bunny ears, bunny tail and a tow hook. The Dash iPad app already contains blocks of code that students can use to program Dash to clean up toys with the Bulldozer or move soccer/footballs down field. My students can code Bunny Dash to go on an Egg Hunt, which can inspire other character creations using Dash! My students can code Dash to use the Tow Hook haul items from one place to another during a Dash Challenge.
