Dash & Dot Robots Bring the Wonder of Coding to 4th Grade!

My students need Dash & Dot robots to work with in our classroom makerspace, as they develop 21st century coding and robotics skills.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My Students

Our classroom Makerspace and 4th grade Maker Club provide opportunities for my students to engage in innovative creative thinking and collaborative problem solving. Coding and robotics is the next step we will take in our STEM learning this year!

My fourth grade students live in an urban, low-income city comprised largely of immigrant families.

Many of my students speak a language other than English at home. Despite the challenges that they face, the students in my school are consistently eager to learn, and enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities, especially when it comes to technology. They are fascinated and engaged by opportunities to use technology to enhance their learning. The majority of my students do not have computers or other types of technology at home, so it is that much more important that they are able to experience new technology at school. With heavy emphasis on the content areas, my students do not have a lot of opportunities to express themselves creatively in the classroom. I want my classroom to be a place for active learning, hard work, AND creativity--these qualities do not have to be exclusive of each other.

My Project

The Maker Movement is growing in education! A Makerspace is a place set aside for students to engage in hands-on discovery, invention, and understanding. In our classroom Makerspace, my students and my afterschool Maker Club collaborate and use creative thinking and problem solving skills to become innovators as they investigate concepts further. Dash & Dot robots are hands-on learning tools that teach creativity, problem solving, and coding to children. My students will see their code come to life in a real-world, hands-on way that engages them fully in the concepts they are learning about. As robotics and computers become increasingly prevalent in students’ lives, understanding programming concepts is becoming very important for students’ success. Students will work in small groups to develop their collaboration and communication abilities as they learn valuable 21st century skills, that will prepare them for today's world.

The Dash & Dot robots and coding lessons will provide opportunities for my students to learn in new and exciting ways.

They will develop their higher order critical thinking and creative problem solving skills. They will improve their abilities to collaborate and work as a team. They will learn how to use technology to enhance their learning. Help turn my students into innovators!
