About My Students

Grady, Charlotte, Alexis, Jeffrey, Camryn, Maggie, Christopher, Leif, and Harley are one of six groups I have working to create a community effort in designing a lighting system for our great walking trails that we have behind our school and in our town park. They have begun the process by measuring the distance around the trails and walkways to see what kind of lighting and positioning would be an asset to allow day and night time walks in our park. They have created a park to scale and incorporated all the items currently in the park to make it safe.

The park was started in 2011 with the Patten Area Women's Club, which has continued the flower gardening, but have been unable to look further into making the walkways and park area a contribution to all members of our community. My students have taken on the responsibility of providing a safe environment for everyone who visits our great town.

Place based learning has created an open ended arena for my kids and learning has become more engaging due to their work is being applied to their own area and lives. Please help us raise funds for this activity.

Students will be maintaining a park that was established in 2011 by the PAWC. The purpose of our learning is to design a lighting system that will illuminate the park providing a safe environment for our students and community to visit and enjoy. We will be maintaining the current flowering boxes that were designed to put into the park and maintain them by growing the plants we need in our newly established greenhouse.

Students will be learning about the PH balance of plant material and proper growth lighting and how it effects the plants ability to prosper in the proper soil and atmospheric environment. We will be teaming up with the Patten Area Women's Club to create a relationship with all walks of life and to learn from them their knowledge of the area and they types of plants that will create a great environment.

In Their Own Words

The Dark Horizon project will create a safe environment for everyone in our school and community to gather and walk about. It will illuminate the park to make it easy to navigate and safe to visit. The floral boxes will provide an aesthetic look that will provide an oxygen enriched area.

Each group has an important role to play in the success of our design. We have a group that investigated safety, activities, usage, and the impact the park will have on our community. For example, my group worked with DOT to locate areas for the most effective lighting and placement.

This project is important to our school community because currently we have a park that can't be used in the evening or during the winter. We will be solving the time constraint with the park lighting, and we will maintain the walks through the winter benefitting us and its patrons.
