This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are bright, creative and curious about the world around them. They have dreams to become game designers, actors and even funeral home operators, but they live in an environment that is not kind to dreamers. At the southernmost tip of Atlanta, our school is nestled in the poorest zip code in the city. Ninety-five percent of my students receive free and reduced priced lunch and are economically disadvantaged. Furthermore, a growing number of our students are first generation immigrants just learning to speak English and many will be the first in their families to pursue college, if not the first to graduate high school.
My Project
My kids are daring and dedicated to seeing the world differently and seeing themselves in that new world so they can make changes for the better.
These books provide gateways to the outside world and mirrors to the world my kids already live within.
I am asking for books to circulate through the school library for sharing and for books that we can utilize in workshops. These will be the books that kids can keep and share among their friends. Many times, the kids that attend our school don't have the money to purchase their own books or have the transportation to get to a bookstore. The school library is their window to the world and we want to make sure that they have access to books that feature kids like themselves and things they are interested in.
