I have the privilege of teaching some of the most amazing seventh graders. Many of them have lived through traumatic experiences. Many of them live in poverty. Many of them face challenges no child should ever have to face. Yet they come to school every day, share their smiles, and open their hearts and minds.
Though we have limited resources, I want to share the world with these children.
Exposing students to different cultures and challenges will benefit them all.
Books can act as windows to the world. They can be used to teach students about other cultures and in doing so can reduce stereotyping. I am requesting a class set of the book "Stella by Starlight" for my students that will expose them to an African American protagonist who endured life during a time of segregation. This book also takes place in our home state, so I hope that it will be even more meaningful to my students. My students live in a rural community in the foothills of North Carolina. Learning about other cultures will better equip these students for a future in the global marketplace.
Exposure to diversity will teach my students to acknowledge and accept the differences that make each individual unique.
My students have very little exposure to cultural diversity. Exposure to diversity will help prepare my students to be global citizens.
