After several discussions with the students and faculty the need for a advisement/mentorship program was evident. In an effort to address this need of assisting the adolescents of the community reach their full potential by gaining an awareness of and successfully avoiding—many of the common traps that may prevent them from being successful in school and in the community, the school is in the initial stages of creating mentorship programs.
Currently, the school serves as the learning environment for students in grades 9 through 12.
The student body consists of more than 1250 students. The school is part of the lower socioeconomic Title 1 school program. At least 68% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. As a Title 1 school we are limited to resources and acquire this much needed program. If the school is the recipient of this curriculum it will provide us with practical, useful strategies and concepts that can immediately be implemented during, and upon completion of, the program.
The aim of this program is to help students develop our life skills, strategies and the ability to take on the various obstacles they will face in life more effectively with or without a mentor's presence. Basically, they will be learning life-long learning skills that will make them better individuals.
The program will introduce the students to an evidence based program with practical life applications via workbooks, skits, games and videos.
The lessons will foster analysis and discussion of the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use as well as prescription and OTC drug use and various nicotine delivery devices. Students also analyze the impact of social media on decision making, reaching goals, and self identity.
