Although we are building our Spanish book collection, let's not forget that we must keep our English books up-to-date for the older students.
Many of the older students (4th and 5th graders) don't have much interest in the current collection.
The older students are very interested in graphic novels, and our library's collection of graphic novels is very limited. If the library acquired more graphic novels circulation would increase.
My Project
According to the American Library Association, graphic novels have a powerful effect on attracting and motivating children to read. Graphic novels are also popular with reluctant readers. Also, graphic novels contain complex plots and narrative structures that can also be satisfying to advanced readers.
If we provided books that were of high interest to the 4th and 5th graders, we still have the chance of fostering a love of learning.
Graphic novels are flexible enough that often the same titles can be equally appealing to both reluctant and advanced readers. Providing young people of all abilities with diverse reading materials, including graphic novels, can help them become lifelong readers.
