Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are enrolled in a 50/50 model of a Spanish dual immersion program, where 50% of the instruction is delivered in Spanish and 50% in English. I focus on math and science, delivering the curriculum in both languages. My partner teacher does language arts and social studies, and we both incorporate art and play in our lessons. We work with two sets of students, first and second graders, totaling 44 students.
Approximately 85% of our students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program, and 56% are English language learners, designating this population as low socioeconomic level, and our school as a Title I school.
Despite low resources, my students, all of them, have and demonstrate a great potential in learning with inquisitive questions and ideas.
My Project
Folklórico is traditional Latin American dance that has exaggerated movements with the floral attire and usually paired with mariachi too. The dress and the music reflects regional cultures throughout Latin America. It has also become part of popular culture like in the movie Coco. For this reason, folklórico inspires and represents my students’ families and tradition.
With the traditional dresses and mariachi hats, my students will be motivated to dance and proudly demonstrate a part of their culture.
We have annual dances at school and we would be immensely grateful for the attire to accompany our dance. It would validate their identities at school and make school-home ties stronger.
