Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Disney said, "There's a terrific power to music...the minute you put music behind [pictures], they have life and vitality they don't get any other way." Inspired by Disney, our students want to move and dance and feel the power and joy of music!
Many of our kindergarten students are impoverished.
Over 90% of my class receives free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch at school. Over 90% of the students in my class are also second language learners. These students respond especially well to music as a way to make learning more enjoyable and fun! Despite hardship and challenge, my students are also bright, happy scholars who love coming to school and are eager to learn! Our classroom is a safe place for them to practice, imagine, grow and learn!
My Project
Students will be able to listen and respond to the music CDs in class immediately. I will use the music daily to encourage our students to be physically active and engaged in our classroom lessons, routines and activity times. Musical scarves and multicultural CDs will enable my students to practice many of the VAPA standards for Kindergarten Music and Dance including:
Music 3.1 Identify the various uses of music in daily experience
Music 3.4 Use developmentally appropriate movements in responding to music from various genres and style.
Dance 2.3 Respond spontaneously to different types of music, rhythm, and sounds.
It is my hope that through these experiences, our students will identify and appreciate diverse music and grow creatively!
Even though many of my students live in a high poverty area, they deserve rich musical and dance experiences!
