My students need aluminum wire to build armatures for 3D sculpture houses. They need construction paper to make the walls, and fluorescent paint for fun!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Creating three-dimensional (3D) projects are experiences my students crave. Few opportunities exist for my students to work in 3D or with sculpture wire. The materials cost so much! I have always wanted to do a project like this with my students but never had the chance .
Students at our elementary school need positive experiences, as many as they can get.
Families are struggling in poverty, with money going to food, shelter, and clothing. There is little left for experiences like art.
Three-dimensional projects will give them new experiences and teach them critical thinking skills. I want to provide my students with more 3D art experiences, but I need a little help.
Almost all my students, 97%, receive free or reduced-lunch. Approximately 40% of our student population is African-American, 40% Caucasian, and 20% Hispanic.
My Project
Students will build a wire armature for a 3D house sculpture. They will bend the sculpture wire to make the house look like it is dancing. We have been learning how to show movement in our drawings, and showing movement in sculpture will be taking art to a new level. Colorful, fade-resistant construction paper will be used to cover the armatures. Tape and tacky glue will be used to attach the construction paper to the wire. The students will use fluorescent paints to add fun decorations and details to the dancing houses.
This project will allow the students at our school to experience creating in three-dimensions.
The students do not get to do this often. Being able to think and create in three-dimensions is important for success in a multitude of disciplines and careers.
