My students love to dance, it is something they know they are good at. My students are talented musically and physically. This year I would like to include rhythmic exercises, patterns and movements using drumsticks and ribbons (last year we used unsharpened pencils and bandanas).
"To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak"- Hopi Indian saying.
Our school community is a diverse mix of Guyanese, African American, Caribbean, Asian and Hispanic families. We are a PreK-5th grade school in Queens, NY. We believe that all students can meet high standards of excellence, as well as develop social and creative skills through a cooperative effort of the teachers, administration, families, and community.
My Project
The materials will help to let my students experience what collaboration and cross curricular activities are all about. Using drumsticks and ribbons to create and perform rhythm patterns and dance choreography together will be a fun Stomp/Drum-Line experiment.
Dance and music is the one thing my students feel confident about.
They know they are performers and choreographers every time they enter the dance studio.
We perform in our school's concerts to present our achievements and accomplishments. I am hopeful that the materials being asked for can really enhance our dance program.
I want my students to feel better about themselves through music and dance. If I keep them interested and excited about the arts, specifically dance and music, I am hopeful that they some day find their way into a career they are passionate about in the arts.
