My students need dance costumes for our school Dance Team programs throughout the school year.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students range from Kindergarten through 8th grade. The Dance Teams come to my dance class to learn many different dance styles, to learn competitive teamwork, get a good workout, and along the way learn many other life lessons. They come from modest homes, some live in poverty, and all live in a gritty urban setting. We have crime, drug dealing, fires and shootings all around our neighborhood, some a little too close to our doorstep. It's the reality we teachers and our students face every day.
Despite this challenging environment, the administrators, teachers, aides, and staff at our school do the utmost to create a safe and nurturing community and haven for our students and their parents.
We provide many programs that assist all student families, such as a food pantry, clothing donations, free holiday celebrations, and guidance for available social services and medical care. All students at our school receive free breakfast, lunch, and a hot afternoon meal before they go home.
And our students? They are so resilient, and can and do rise above the challenges. If given the chance, their talent shines! Please help us to help our students.
About your project... We have a robust Dance Team program at our school, and the students put on Talent Show competitions for the general school population (students and parents) on a regular basis. Teachers and administrators are the judges, and the students work so hard to perfect their dance moves as a team and win these competitions. What we could really use is costumes for our competitions! As you can see from the photo, before each performance we send instructions home to the parents to have their children wear certain a certain color or style of clothes. The students look wonderful, of course, but it would be fantastic to have some leotards and dance skirts so that we can begin to create a costume wardrobe for our Dance Teams.
Our students come from homes where the parents work very hard, but the income is modest - consequently, it's just not possible for our students to purchase their own costumes.
Please consider donating to Part 2 of our Dance Team project. I can assure you that the students will be absolutely thrilled to have some "professional" dance costumes, and you will be able to see their reactions in the photos we take during their first "full dress" competitions! Thank you so much for reading about our project.
