Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a dance teacher at a public elementary school within the South Bronx. This year I am creating a program that will allow students in second through fifth grade gain a deeper understanding about the art of dance. Since these children do not have the opportunity to take dance lessons, I would like to offer them the chance to do so during and after school. I have planned for the students to study numerous forms of dance including African dance, Native American dance ballet, modern dance, tap, improvisation and jazz. I would like for the students to learn the technique of each of these styles as well as to begin to relate it to other academic subjects such a reading and social studies. In order to gain a deep understanding of each of these forms of dance they will need to be exposed to literature, videos, guest artists and intensive hands on training. Each day I will teach grades 2-5 as well as a girls and a boys dance team. We will also carry this program over to an after school program where the children who want to expand their knowledge of dance will have the opportunity to do so for two hours 3 days a week.
In order to make this possible, I would like to request some CD's to use during our dance classes and for school and community performances. Also I would like to request videos demonstrating the various forms of dance that we will cover. This is will give the students an opportunity to see what the end goal is of each unit of study. Lastly, I would like to request two ballet bars that will be used to teach technique throughout the ballet lessons. Without these resources, this program will not be possible.
This program will give the students something to be excited for a look forward to each day while still being immersed in learning. Dance in education teaches children self esteem, determination, and most of all gives students the chance to set and achieve goals. The arts just may be the answer to a better life these children.
