Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Far too often social studies is experienced through a textbook. I am a fourth grade teacher in a small school with a school program. We have about 130 students in our small school, grades K-4. This year we are starting a new focus for our small school program. The focus will be multicultural education through the arts. Our students are deprived of rich cultural experiences that would heighten their senses of the world around them. We believe this can be achieved through dance, music and the arts. Most of these cultural experience can be achieved right here in Chicago, yet many of our students have not experienced them. We will have social studies units that focus on various cultures such as West African, Korean, Latin American, and Middle Eastern. To bring our West African unit to life, we are proposing a trip to see Dance Africa in October. Dance Africa is described as a cultural experience with hypnotic beats of authentic African percussions, unbridled energy of traditional African dance, exquisite costumes, with vibrant colors, patterns, and textures, a lush tapestry of sight and sound, born out of the desire to create a cultural bridge that unites people of all ages, genders, and races. Going to see Dance Africa would provide our students with an invaluable experience of oral language, visual arts, music, and dance.
