Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a Spanish Dual Language Program in a very diverse Title I school in NYC. Some students come from low-income families and some live in temporary housing. Their families are diverse in their culture, academic abilities, and economic status. About 1/3 of the students have an Individual Educational Plan to help with their academic needs. Some others receive Support Services for their physical disabilities.
My students are bright and enthusiastic, but many of them do not have access to the kinds of books that they can get excited about reading independently.
My Project
Our school has the amazing opportunity to have the fantastically popular kids author, Dan Gutman, do a virtual school visit with us (for free)! To capitalize on that excitement, we would like to get a great collection of his books, including some from the My Weird School series, as well as a bunch of his nonfiction books that kids get excited about as well!
Especially as the pandemic rages on and our students are back and students are doing remote learning, these super fun and engaging books will spark some joy and excitement for independent reading!
This selection of books will provide enough to keep some in the classroom but send a lot of them home for kids to keep in their very own libraries!
