Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a reading specialist at my school. I work with 1st graders. I find that the books that are available to my students are topics that are outdated and they cannot relate to. I believe my students need more up to date books that has topics and subjects they can relate to.
I work with a diverse population of emergent readers.
My students are energetic 5, 6 and 7 year old children, who come with a range of background knowledge. They have amazing cultures in which they share with me during our discussions before we write. The students I work with, find reading difficult in the classroom and require one on one assistance from me (the reading specialist) so that they can catch up to their peers. Overall, I work in a school where literacy is a struggle for our students.
My Project
My students will use the items selected as part of their daily reading practice. I have chosen varied genres of text: poetry, informational and fiction text. I have also chosen biographies so they can learn about people from the past. I want them to have a broad range of reading abilities with different genres of books. In addition, I want them to develop a love for reading and to find reading easy and not a struggle.
My students will benefit greatly from these materials.
My students will increase their reading levels to grade level and beyond. They will gain a vast amount of knowledge on the world and culture. My students will develop a love for reading.
