This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty area. Although, to some, this may come off as being a hindrance, I do not want my students to feel that way. I teach my students daily that everyone is capable of learning and that learning can be fun. The main aspect to help them learn is that I must make the material meaningful and relevant to each of them. My students are very bright and are capable of going further in life than perhaps some of their family members.
My Project
Reading is a skill that needs to be mastered not just for comprehension purposes but for daily use outside of the content area. My students need these reading manipulatives to better master the art of reading. Reading goes beyond just literal. When reading you have to understand the figurative part as well. We would practice weekly with the Idiom activity so they can understand the figurative side more. We will also use the Finding Evidence activity, so students will understand that you have to search for the answer you need. It isn't always just going to pop out for you. You must put in work to get out everything that you are searching for. We also need Daily Math Journals to practice more on Math skills that need to be mastered which cannot happen without extra practice.
