My students are among the brightest yet most deprived students in our urban community. All are 100% free lunch qualified. The typical school environment has not been one in which they thrived. Thus, they are attending an alternative learning school.
We are dedicated to providing an education to meet their academic needs while helping them to overcome many of the obstacles in their lives which may have been handed to them by generational poverty status.
The traditional learning expectations have encouraged many students to drop out of school, thus impacting their future successes. Our goal is to lead by example with a work ethic and high character. We want each student to feel loved, valued, and respected. We can accomplish this by meeting them where they are, setting high expectations, and permitting them to help us understand how to meet their goals.
Now that we have academic/alternative learning funded, we are in need of exercise equipment. Our students are low income urban dwellers with no yard or safe park nearby. Winters are brutal in KC. We need indoor exercise equipment.
This physical exercise marriage to mental and academic success project will be based heavily on the Mathematical Curriculum.
Students will develop a personal plan for success.
They will exercise daily, record data, and create pictorial graphic organizers depicting results. Algorithms and algebraic expressions and equations will be utilized to calculate results, and reach mastery level of the Missouri Standards per MAP assessments. An alternate path to learning is important to these students struggling to focus more on school and less on the path life has handed them. They will add, subtract, multiple, & divide fluently upon completing this physical approach.
