Do you remember your favorite story? You would have your mom read it over and over and over again! In Kindergarten, hearing a fluent reader and building vocabulary are both key concepts to the reading process.
My students are very diverse.
I have 16 kids in my class who come from very different experiences. 8 of my kids are ELL (English Language Learners). Out of those 8 students, 3 do not speak any English. They are passionate about learning and excited to be here each and every day. Although the language barrier can be difficult, we are working together and I am passionate about giving my students every opportunity possible.
My Project
Every day my students participate in Daily 5. This is a way that we structure the reading portion of our day. My kids are working on reading by participating in different activities. They work on "read" to self. Right now that involves them "reading" the pictures. They will also have the opportunity to read to a partner, listen to reading, word work and write about reading.
I do not have the resources to have my students partake in Listen to Reading. They need to hear fluent readers each and every day. By purchasing the personal CD players, my students will have the opportunity to hear a story being read to them. Not only is this a favorite activity but they are able to build their vocabulary and hear fluency.
My students are falling in love with learning.
Help them become better readers by donating to our project! The kids love having stories read to them but since most of them can not read yet, they need help. Providing these CD players will allow my students to hear their favorite stories when I am not able to read to them.
