My Students
I teach at a Title I school. 80% of my students receive free meals. My students, high-school age, all perform at a third grade level or below. I teach special education.
My students have so many abilities that others are unable to see.
They can complete work tasks, find their way around the neighborhood, do their own laundry, and teach their peers how to properly wash dishes. They can choose a recipe, create a grocery list, go shopping, and prepare the meal. These students may not be performing on grade level, but they are ready for real life.
My Project
Everyone has seen a Roald Dahl movie brought to life. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, and The BFG are all feel-good family movies. The only thing better than the movies are the books. I want my students to participate in a Roald Dahl author study.
This author study will give my students the chance to see that the book is truly better than the movie.
In our neighborhood, not many of my students have access to these books at home. And, due to their reading levels, my students cannot possibly read these titles at home alone. I want to provide them with the childhood opportunity that they missed out on.
