Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am asking for 4 sets of 15 books from one of the greatest childrens' literature author, Roald Dahl. Funding this proposal would help my students in two ways. First, these books are leveled for struggling readers. That means that for my students who are not reading on a 5th grade level, we would start with the lowest level book, "Matilda" and progress upward toward "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." I would use these books during guided reading when so many times, the material we are using is uninteresting or childish, which is one reason many of these same students dislike reading. My lower reading level students would feel a sense of accomplishment when they finish not only one book, but these four progressively more difficult books by the same author.
Another way these sets would be beneficial is that they will help my students learn about literature and not just reading. I think that many times while we are trying to teach "reading", students miss out on the bigger picture of good literature and purpose in learning to read. By giving my students books rather than just reading material it will foster a love of reading literature and not just the skills which are necessary for reading. My students will be able to do an indepth author study with these four books while improving their reading levels throughout the year.
