This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I facilitate the learning of 22 rambunctious and curious second graders. I call them my little sponges. They absorb information into their tiny brains. They are so excited about learning new things. I enjoy coming to school everyday.
They are fearless.
We are learning to become independent learners and thinkers. We live in a high crime and poverty stricken area of the city. However, they do not let their situation dictate their lives. They strive to become better than their neighborhood.
My Project
These books will help me create a print-rich independent reading classroom for my second graders. Having a print-rich environment is important for developing children’s language skills, because they discover that there is another way to communicate—through print.
They will also be able to choose books that interest them.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will help my students increase their reading stamina. My students are reading levels have increased since the beginning of the school year.
I want our classroom library to be eclectic and kid friendly. I want every student to be able to choose books that will fuel their fire for reading independently.
This project will assist me in enhancing their independent reading skills and prepare them for third grade literature.
