My Students

I will teach 5th grade in a high-risk, high poverty school this year for my first time. Currently, our school is on a plan of improvement due to low test scores. I need 30 Thesaurus/dictionaries for my fifth grade classroom. Students will learn how to use print and digitized tools in gathering information for vocabulary, roots, suffixes, prefixes, synonyms, and other parts of speech per our Oklahoma Academic Standards. Students will use these tools both whole group and independently for research.

My Project

Students will have the opportunity to build the essential skill of increasing vocabulary words by looking up daily words in their morning work. Students will use their dictionary to find derivational words, suffixes and prefixes during our reading block. In our school, it is imperative students have access to vocabulary building activities in order to support reading comprehension. Students will use their vocabulary words in speaking and writing as well as parts of speech while learning synonyms, antonyms and homonyms. Students living in poverty suffer in reading progression due to the lack of language in their home. Please help me fill this gap.
