Help me give my students the skills, knowledge, and tools to maintain their bicycles. Many of their bicycles need simple maintenance, but specific tools are required to perform such tasks, such as wrenches, a bike stand, and equipment.
My students are extremely motivated and excited to show up on a daily basis. They consistently ask thought provoking questions and assist each other in learning the material on a deeper level. Many of my students have assisted other struggling students and have learned more about the material simply by becoming a teacher to another student.
Hard is not impossible.
There is no barrier for which my students will not push through to see the other side. Bikes are often tossed aside because they are deemed as broken, when in reality, simple adjustments and maintenance can keep students riding their bikes 'like new'. With our cycling club, we will be able to service students that are part of the club, along with other students from campus that would like to learn more about how to keep their bikes in working order.
My Project
Currently, the majority of my students are participating in the school's cycling club with secondhand bikes, often requiring mechanical repair. Many students on campus are dissuaded from participating because they believe their bikes are completely broken and need to be replaced. As a result, many bikes are left in a garage or outside, rotting away, deemed as a lost cause.
Bikes in need of repair can get a new life!
With basic mechanical lessons and the proper tools/materials, many of my students can get back out on the road. Several studies have shown that cycling is a great solution in combating childhood obesity, but it also assists in improving our mental health and well being. With some simple mechanical lessons and the proper tools, we can get our students back to an active lifestyle, helping drive a better community, on and off campus.
