Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 26 very happy and exuberant 1st graders. We are a classroom community of learners, where I have high expectations for my students and want to see them reach their fullest potential.
We are located in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago which is home to a large Mexican-American community.
Most of my students are bilingual and 97% of them qualify for the free lunch program. Many of my students have difficult home lives and lack the foundational skills needed to be successful readers. It is my job to close that gap while fostering a love of reading and of school.
My students are active learners and benefit from hands on activities and games. I try to make learning fun, collaborative, and engaging!
My Project
My students need more practice segmenting and blending CVC words. They need to learn to connect the sounds together so that when they encounter bigger words in their reading they are able to effectively sound them out.
Students will use the CVC games to help them master the skill of blending letter sounds and reading simple words.
This will help solidify their foundational skills to set them up for future success in reading.
The materials will be used both independently in centers and in small groups during guided reading.
The stacking flipbooks and games will help develop skills in building simple words, identifying beginning, middle and ending sounds, and decoding. The phonics stamp set will give students practice with beginning, middle, and ending sounds and reading simple words. The twist and turn letters will give students practice with reading CVC words by changing just one letter, just 2 letters, or all three. With these learning materials my students will gain the solid foundation they need to be strong readers!
