Cutting Up with Cricut and Creative Art through STEM

My Students

My students are amazing and work so hard. They are 6th graders in a tiny rural east Texas junior high school.

My classroom is an adventure, and my students spend the year learning the skills they will need as they move forward in their junior high careers.

My students are excited to be on the "big kid" campus and begin the scary world of junior high. They are ready to explore the world through science and social studies (world history) and to expand their way of thinking. They take so much pride in their work and are willing to challenge their minds for the sake of learning. They are still wanting to "please" their teacher and try so hard at all they do.

I want to provide my students with as many exciting, hands-on, and real-world opportunities and adventures as I possibly can. Many of my students are economically disadvantaged and have limited resources. I want my students to know each and every day that they are smart, loved, cared for, and, most importantly, that they are capable of anything they set their minds to.

My Project

My IF/THEN STEM project was inspired by the awesome IF/THEN project, "If We Build Up Girls, Then We All Become STEMinists". This project integrates art and all of its creativity into STEM. During the project, I plan to share several creative art collection video resources with my 6th-grade students to further engage them in creative arts and STEM. The videos I will share with my students from the IF/THEN collection are the video "Long Profile: Yamilée Toussant Beach,” and “Human Cell Images Turned into Fashion Pieces with Molecular Biologist Beata Mierzwa | Curiosity Camp.” I will also share “Personal Photo 1: Beata Mierzwa.” I will also share several other of the Mission Unstoppable DIY videos with my students, including "Mission Unstoppable: Saving the Environment with Conservation Photography,” “Mission Unstoppable DIY: Make a Speaker” and “Mission Unstoppable DIY: Turn Your Phone into a Macro Lens Camera.”

This project will allow my 6th-grade students to be able to totally become engaged in integrating Creative Art and STEM by creating unique art based on the science concepts we are studying in class (cells, organisms, and layers of the earth) using the Cricut Maker and Cricut Heat Press.

My students will be able to use the Cricut Maker and Heat Press to decorate aprons, totes, t-shirts, personal journals, and notebooks with their creative designs based on their interpretation of cells, organisms, and the layers of the earth as a creative art. They will be able to use the Cricut Maker to cut out their designs and the Cricut Heat Press to iron them on their aprons, t-shirts, or totes. The TPT gift card will allow us to download supplemental graphics, clip art, and borders to add to our projects. We will use the other supplies and materials to create these projects,
