Cutting Ourselves Free: A Project to Support Dissections

Help me give my students lifelong memories about dissections, a deeper understanding of evolutionary relationships, and the chance to deepen their scientific literacy skills!

My Students

My students are bright, funny, caring, and curious. They are New Yorkers with a passion for the performing arts, and they relish the opportunity to learn new things, whether they're in a performing arts or liberal arts classroom.

My students love to challenge themselves to improve in all kinds of ways, and they value hands-on learning.

They find science engaging and interesting, and they are curious about biology. They love learning in the lab way more than learning in the classroom, because they're curious about learning first-hand how living things work.

My Project

I asked students what special lab experiences they'd like to have this year, and 65% of them responded to my survey that they'd like to do dissections. While I'm not particularly surprised by this response, I need help making it a reality.

This week of dissections will focus on the evolutionary relationships between the four organisms we will study, and students will strengthen their literacy skills as they describe the similarities and differences they see.

We will dissect an earthworm, a crayfish, a grasshopper, and a frog. Students will complete detailed dissection journals to communicate their findings and record data.

While I know this project is expensive, I also know that valuing student voice and giving them a say in what they learn and how they learn it will translate into a lifelong positive learning experience. Everyone I know that has done dissections can remember that experience and talk about it passionately decades later, and I want to give that gift to my students.
