Cutting Our Chops on the Carpet (Reading Spot for 5th grade)
My students need a classroom library carpet. My reluctant readers need a comfortable/inviting read area. Help get them out of their desks, onto the carpet and into books!
Read any good books lately, one that you couldn't put down? Imagine a struggling 5th grade reader feeling that for the first time. Some of my students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations. This could be the year that magic happens and they fall in love with books.
My students are a diverse group and speak many different languages including English, Farsi, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Spanish and Russian.
Their interests are as wide and varied as their languages. 60% of my students receive free and reduced lunch. We are an urban school in Los Angeles and are proud of our diversity. We are diverse in learning styles, socio economic backgrounds as well as abilities. My students love learning, Science, Technology, Math, Art, and Engineering are among their interest. Of course Reading ranks right up there. Now... If we can just get them ALL to successfully read at grade level!
My Project
Over the years I've managed to get many good books for the students to read. Unfortunately, they cannot all read the books on their grade level. For that reason I believe I need to entice them to read more and often! I think I can do this with a comfortable place to read. One in which I can join them 1:1, or in small groups to assist them. The desk is the last and most uncomfortable place to read. If you are struggling, of course the chair is another obstacle in your literate life. It also increases the chance of another student who is far beyond grade level noticing the lower level of the struggling reader. Conversley, the struggling reader becomes even more keenly aware of his/her shortcomings when a neighbor's higher leveled reading book is noticed. It compounds the reading difficulty for the struggling reader and further impacts confidence.
If there is a space where the students can read comfortably and get the help they need without being in the spotlight they will excel.
This carpet will make a huge difference.
It can make all the difference in the world to a 5th grader who needs to get the reading support necessary to make the academic strides that will carry them through middle and high school. Please help to make a difference.
