Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Student population at our middle school is very diverse. About 80% of students are receiving a free or discounted lunch. I teach science and English to a block of STEAM magnet students and a block of students from our Korean Language Immersion class. I want my students to be able to master technology that will help them compete in our technology dependent world!
My students can use technology, but I want them to know how to make it, manipulate it, and use it to solve real world problems.
I want my students to be the innovators of the future!
My Project
The Cricut, an electric die-cut machine, connects to a computer to cut out virtually any shape you can think of from a variety of materials, including fabric and balsawood. From poster displays to manipulatives used in our STEM unit, the possibilities with the Cricut are limitless. With the Cricut, students will really be able to dig into what we're studying and create relevant pieces of art work. With the help of the Cricut, they will have more access to shapes and pieces, helping their engineering skills as they build their projects. Projects like this not only reinforce the skills students are learning in math and science, but also helps make literature more tangible for students through differentiation.
This Cricut will also be used with students from the Korean Language Immersion Program.
These students spend 50% learning in Korean, the other half of the day they learn in English with me. We will use the Cricut to create projects that will reinforce and support their program.
When they are given the opportunity to showcase their learning through creative means, the end result is always outstanding. By providing my classroom with a Cricut, students will be able to use their creative talents to make meaning.
