This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a small high school that focuses on alternative means of learning. Most of our students are at risks of not finishing school. They enrolled, behind in credits, have substantially low grade point averages, and have been unsuccessful in mainstream high school program.
Socially, most of our students come from broken homes and have dysfunctional relationships with their families. As a result, they tend to have little hope in terms of achieving real success. The school serves as student’s last chance of obtaining their high school diploma and making a difference in their lives.
Our best instructional and effective curriculum of success with our students has been project based lessons. These lessons force students to be interested in learning, increase their involvement, and allow them to assumed leadership roles. Hence, the magazine project will help improve student’s basic skills in Science, and English/Language.
We will be making cutting edge science magazines like Popular Science. Every student will write articles on current issues in science. The magazine will include cutting edge photos from labs, games/puzzles that entice their readers and student personal experiences with everyday science experience. The magazine will be a reflection of their interests and an exploration of students writing skills. The students will be divided into teams and managed by a chief editor that will oversee and assign responsibilities accordingly.
While it is common place in the majority of mainstream schools to have a computer lab, our school is still behind in obtaining updated computers to fulfill our students’ needs. We are in need of computers that will allow our students to research the Internet, used word processing programs for writing. The computers will allow us to do desk publishing, use photo shop programs, and graphic arts. The computer will used as a tool to help students complete their cutting edge science magazines.
Your donation will mean a world to our students! It will act as a catalyst to stimulate students learning and interests. In turn, our students will experience success and realistic hope of obtaining their high school diploma.
