My students need access to new literature with rich, diverse characters like Knockout and See You in the Cosmos. We also need additions to our new flexible seating like saucer chairs and bungee chairs, this is making a world of difference to them!
Imagine sitting in a work environment for 7 hours a day where you had to stay in a hard plastic chair. As I have researched the benefits of flexible seating, I have realized how critical it is to give students a more encouraging place to learn by giving them an environment tailored to their unique needs.
My classroom has a variety of diverse learners.
Our school services students throughout the county in our area. We are a unique building housing all 5-6 graders in the district. The size of our building leaves resources stretched at times. Students rarely get the opportunity to have access to classroom seating that will both engage and stimulate their brains. Having the ability to have access to flexible seating, to choose where they learn best is extremely empowering. This would help with their autonomy as learners, and that helps with personal growth and intrinsic motivation throughout the year.
My Project
My students wait with great anticipation for their favorite authors to publish books. We have countdowns and waiting lists galore for the newest titles. Titles include Knockout and Rhyme Schemer by K.A. Holt, See You in the Cosmos by Jack Cheng, and other with inspirational and diverse characters. These are lovingly passed around and shared all year. We are also building our flexible seating arrangements to provide an engaging learning environment.
Books give students a chance to see themselves in the characters and give them a chance to see that they too can overcome the most daunting of obstacles.
These books with diverse characters will build our library of characters who my students can relate to. They are inspiring, sweet, and full of life. The authors are people they look up to as mentors in writing as well.
The seating will add to our current seating arrangement which has made a huge difference in a mere matter of days. The looks on their faces with the first additions arrived was absolutely priceless. We need holders for our stability balls to keep them in place. We are also seeking two bungee chairs and two saucer chairs. These will keep these readers engaged and happy during learning time. This additional seating will complete our classroom as a flexible seating friendly room.
