Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The student body at this school is one of the most diverse in California. Our students are from a mid-size urban city close to San Francisco. About 44% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches due to their current economic situation. Of an estimated 1,900 students, 400 are English Language Learners. Around 27% of the parents of our students have a college degree. Some of the students who graduate from our school are the first in the family to have a high school diploma and many more are the first to attend college. The ethnic breakdown is approximately 47% Hispanic, 33% Asian/Pacific Islander, 10% White, and 10% African American. Our students get along remarkably well considering their diversity. At one point it was determined that our students had over 60 home languages. The school is over 60 years old and it has been very poorly maintained over the years and our students often suffer from the climate that has been created by this aging facility.
My Project
There are so many reasons to love the art of collage from the freedom it allows to the powerful stories that can be told through it. I teach several different collage lessons to my art students and while they love their projects, it's more difficult than it should be because of our dull blades. In addition, my drafting tables are not a suitable cutting surface because they're easily damaged.
Without sharp X-acto blades and cutting mats to protect my drafting tables, cutting out their design is challenging.
Protective cutting mats are made with a resilient vinyl that heals so completely it can be used as a writing/drawing surface, even over previous cut lines. Cutting mats are recommended for calligraphers, designers, photographers, or anyone who has a desktop to protect. The translucent cutting mat provides a protective surface for lightboxes, as well as tabletops.
