My students have begun to flourish in our Makerspace. This is a place where, much like a kettle, we combine STEM and the arts to make STEAM. We are now partnering with our amazing Art teacher to offer an after school club to do even more!
My students are designers and innovators.
They come into our makerspace with a passion that is unrivaled in my experience as an educator. At a school where nearly 100% of students are economically disadvantaged, students do not have spaces like this at home, so it is important to me to do everything in my power to continually improve our space for them in school. Having grown up with many opportunities to create with my hands, I know my students will benefit from this club, creating interest in fields they would have otherwise had no exposure to, such as graphic design or entrepreneurship.
My Project
My students will use the Curios and the accessories to learn about stippling, etching, and vinyl cutting. Working alongside with our amazing art teacher, students will design and build things they can sell to help raise money for our space, cover the cost of their materials, and also have a portion for themselves, learning entrepreneurship.
This project will allow my students to seamlessly blend art, design, and technology to create unique products which they will then market and sell.
This will lead to more buy-in from the students, causing them to push themselves to their creative limits and beyond. As we continue to integrate art into STEM to create STEAM, I believe our students will become more well-rounded and open to math or engineering concepts they would have had no desire to explore without it.
