My students are dreamers, problem solvers, and likely the most creative little people you will ever meet.
They are a happy group of first graders who love school, and they love to learn.
One hundred percent of our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch, yet they don't let hardships stand in their way. My students' economic situations are just as varied as are their family dynamics. We have military families, with a local National Guard unit in our area and an Air Force base close by. We aim to take good care of our military families. Our district includes an Indian Reservation, and we have a high population of Hispanic students, many of whom have family members who work in the agricultural industry.
I teach the cutest little first grade buggers you've ever seen! They are so excited to learn and with 17 boys and 6 girls they love everything science related. My idea is to read the non-fiction books to them, so they can learn about insects. These books are also at a level that many of my students can read them independently as well. We will watch the life cycle of ladybugs and butterflies in our classroom with the growing kits. The light table will be used during science and math stations where the children will practice counting with bug counters or practice math facts with the manipulatives, building different insects and bugs, and looking at the Nature Up Close Slides. The PancakeBot will be a blast as we make insect pancakes. The students will learn how to program the PancakeBot. The children will help make them, and it will be a great culminating activity for our insect unit.
Well-designed, hands-on activities in the classroom foster connections to real-world situations and increase learner engagement.
I think these hands-on lessons and activities will be remembered for many years to come. They will learn some interesting facts about insects, watch some insects grow, and integrate insects into other curriculum areas. Children love insects and bugs! They like to catch them and learn about them. You wouldn't be "bugging" us at all by helping us out with this project! Thank you for taking a look at it!
