Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Can we decorate it?" My students like to ask this as we make Valentine's Day bag to hold the valentines they will be exchanging. My students enjoy art projects and being creative, but we need supplies.
I am a 5th grade teacher at a Title I school in Southern California.
I have been teaching here for the last 12 years and all of those years have been spent at the 5th grade level. Our school has almost 1000 students on campus everyday, so as you can imagine, it is a busy place to be every day! We have over 97% of these students qualified for the free and reduced breakfast and lunch program. Over 80% of these students are second language learners, which means English is not their first language.
My Project
Last year, our staff ordered a new Roller Mark die cutting machine, and it is great because it is an upgrade from the machine we had previously. But we need some more art die cuts to use with this machine. With the Accucut die cuts, teachers are quickly able to cut out shapes to use in many curricular areas throughout the school year. Not only can the entire staff have access to these die cuts this year (Kindergarten through sixth grade), but they will be used for many years to come. Often times at the holidays, students create art projects and some of these holiday die cuts will be used during those seasons. In addition to these die cuts, I would like to add tissue paper to my project to replenish what we used up last year. Using the die cuts and tissue paper, students create symmetrical pictures. It is not only art, but a math skill as well! With the Disney CREATE grant and private donors, we will be able to help our entire school by providing the staff with new die cut options.
Since we received a new die cut machine last year, we now need to increase our supply of die cuts.
These art materials will be used for many years to come, not just for one school year. Since these are non-consumable items, generations of students will be able to enjoy these die cuts while creating art projects. Thank you to Disney and private donors for considering our project.
