Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Transitional Kindergarten students are 4.5-5 years old. They relish learning and discovering new things. They are all English Language Learners whose parents often do not speak or comprehend English. They often have minimal access to books and resources that promote academic and social development.
Once they step into the world of Transitional Kindergarten, they realize they are part of a community that promotes learning, laughter, challenges, and successes.
Students commit to being explorers and cultivators of knowledge and learning.
My Project
Two years ago, some very good friends and generous donors gifted my class with reams and reams of brightly colored construction paper. I've seen two groups of Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students exhaust that supply of paper as we've created many TLC Lesson books and Christmas, Valentine's, Mother's Day, and Father's Day cards.
TLC Lessons help my students develop stronger fine motor skills and spatial abilities as they cut shapes from paper that range from 4 inches wide to 1 centimeter wide.
The TLC program includes units such as Colors, Zoo Animals, Ocean life, The Gingerbread Man, The Thanksgiving Story and often require colors of paper that are not available at our school site.
It's only through generous supporters of public education and from my own checking account that my students are able to experience and live in a world of amazing and vibrant colors.
