I am a special education tutor (certified teacher on limited salary) with some neat sixth graders with differentiated learning styles. Many of my kiddos are challenged by ADD/ADHD and school can be a struggle.
I have the opportunity this year to share space with two other special education tutors.
We each support 15+ spec ed students in their gen ed classes as well as provide instruction and meet individualized goals in our shared intervention resource room.
We are moving to an older building with older furnishings (photo provided of the current room) this year and want to make our shared space as inviting to learning and focus as possible.
My Project
As a tutoring space, our classroom is not outfitted with flexible seating. 90% of our students struggle with ADD/ADHD or sensory issues. Our students with autism benefitted from homemade cushions and creatively pieced together alternative seating we provided last year. We want to outfit this year’s classroom with classy flexible seating that enables them to focus and achieve.
I hope that addressing the sensory issues and using shades to soften the fluorescent lighting will relieve the sensory intake that may trigger headaches that we dealt with last year.
We want to provide a better learning environment. Cushioned chairs will help!
