Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of a diverse group of learners. My classroom has 26 second grade students from varying abilities. The socioeconomic background of our students is more than 95 % free / reduced lunch. I teach in an urban inner city school rich with diverse cultures from all over the world. Most of my students need additional learning materials to meet grade level expectations. Our school saying is Better today than yesterday! Better tomorrow than today! I want to make their tomorrow better!
My Project
My second graders will enjoy reading and performing reader's theater in the classroom. They will enjoy working on reading fluency and expression while reading plays and acting them out.
My students will be able to transform themselves into one of the Three Little Pigs or The Big Bad Wolf by changing their voices and acting as though they are actually blowing down the house!
By having the Let's Talk Story Puppets available to them at a dramatic station they will really be able to take on the role of that character.
Students enjoy using hands on materials to bring characters to life! We will use the Reader's Theater Script Boxes at centers to differentiate for all of my learners on a K-3 reading level. Students will build their fluency skills and practice their tone of voice while using the Fluency Kits and Reader's Theater Boxes. We will also use timers and microphones to enhance the real theater experience in the classroom. Students will time themselves to build up their reading fluency. Students will also make up their own plays to act out with a group using the washable dress up masks and the Let's Talk Kid Puppets. My classroom will have Curtain Call for years to come in my second grade classroom.
