Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in the smallest elementary school in Lawrence, Kansas. We have the highest percent of Native American students in the district and are one of the most culturally diverse schools in the city.
Over eighty percent of our students receive free or reduced price lunches.
We also have some of the highest test scores in the district in both reading and math.
My classroom is filled with students who are learning to write and direct their own learning goals. Students in our classroom are excited and engaged in every part of their learning.
My Project
My students and I work hard to master every skill needed for their future educational goals. Every item on our wishlist will help engage students' minds as critical thinkers and gamers while supporting their differing physical needs as students. Materials such as our 10 sided dice can be used to build number sense, addition fluency, and help inspire students to create games. Our materials, like the portable desk, allow students to move around the room with ease, giving each student the ability to choose what THEIR body needs to focus.
Learning should be EXCITING!
With each of these tools, students will see that practice can be fun and it can change whenever needed. Research tells us that the average student needs to play around with a concept 10 times before putting it into real understanding and struggling students need 15-20 different practice sessions. This allows me to expand my teaching tool box and give students different ways to practice the skills they need.
