This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are resilient. We live in a highly impoverished community, but we do not use that as an excuse. My students have been identified as among the highest achievers in our state, in spite of our our disadvantages. We are smart, tough, and determined.
The one thing we are lacking is a significant worldview.
We have begun a current events elective to help us better understand our own nation and how we, as Americans, relate to the rest of the world. In order for us to develop that understanding we need high quality instructional materials.
My Project
Many of my students have not traveled more than 20 miles away from home; no trips to beaches, mountains, amusement parks, etc. We do not even have a local public swimming pool or park. Clearly, the life experiences of my students are limited.
These subscriptions will allow me to open the world to my students.
I will use the information in these magazines to help my students understand that the world around them is much larger than they currently think. I will help them see that they are part of a global society, and that they each have an individual place in it.
