The Owls of our school are nestled in the rural area of North Carolina. Placed in a high-needs area, this is a Title I school. The students recognize the school as a safe and comfy place to spend their days. Our classroom, named the "Big Top," is a rich environment in which students are eager to learn! We have a love for collaborating and finding the "just right" spot in the room to do our best work. As the students take ownership of their learning, the Ringmasters are discovering the modes and materials that they need to best represent their learning!
My Project
As students learn to read a variety of text types in third grade, I would also like to incorporate current news topics so they can learn how to be "media smart." By utilizing the magazines provided by Scholastic News, we will be able to engage in reading and discussing topics appropriate to their age.
These Scholastic News magazines will help my students learn about the world around them from within the walls of our classroom.
Scholastic makes these articles accessible to students who are reading on various levels by incorporating a variety of text features and providing online resources with read-aloud options. These magazines are highly-engaging with rich photography and illustrations, and increase vocabulary knowledge with topic-specific words.
