My class is full of eager second grade learners. They enjoy reading and learning about new things each day in our classroom. I want to make sure they have access to texts that will help feed their hunger to read and learn about many different topics!
My students are energetic second graders who enjoy reading and learning new things.
I teach at a Title I school which means that the resources that many of my students have access to outside of the classroom are limited. Also, resources available to us at school are limited and our funds are often spent on necessities rather than on materials that will enhance our curriculum.
My Project
My students will use the Scholastic News and Science Spin materials that I am requesting in several different ways. We will use them for whole group instruction for close reading lessons where we read the text closely for different purposes, which might include finding the main topic or using the text features to answer questions. They will also use them as a source for researching different topics, as well as to help them build their independent reading fluency. After we have used them for different purposes in class, students will be able to take these newspapers home and continue to use them for reading practice at home.

It will provide them with information about grade level content that is on their level which will help them feel successful with reading, while also learning about many news things. These newspapers will help them learn about grade level Science and Social Studies content, while also practicing key grade level reading skills.
