The students at our PreK-5th grade elementary school have a wide variety of backgrounds. They come to school ready to learn, and when they get to the music room, they are ready to make music! However, a lot of the resources at this school are older and starting to need to be replaced, including the instruments and basic classroom supplies in our music room.
All students in Kinder-5th grade get to attend one 50 minute music class a week.
They love to make the most of their time in music with active music-making. Students also learn to read and write music. We incorporate history by learning about famous composers. To accomplish this learning they need more resources. My students love to learn about music through singing, reading, moving, and playing instruments.
We are a Title I, Tier 2 school, with approximately 71% of our students qualifying for free and reduced-price breakfast/lunch. Our transiency rate is around 37%.
My Project
These music curriculum resources will help my young musicians grow- from Kindergarten through 5th Grade! These resources will be used to plan our current virtual music lessons and continue to be relevant as we transition back to a more "normal" learning environment.
One of the wonderful things about being an elementary music teacher is, I truly get to see my students transition from Kindergarten through 5th grade.
It is so important to spiral their curriculum, so we are able to build upon what we learn, year after year. Due to the pandemic, my students are and will be at many different places with their music learning. These new resources will help me find ways to bridge any missing gaps in their musical instruction.
Our district focuses on both the Orff and Kodaly methods for instruction. These resources represent both of these philosophies of music education. Our district also recently adapted our progression of teaching the recorder, and this new method book follows that new sequence of instruction. It will definitely help my beginner recorder players to start out on the "right note"!
